European Union Organic Certification DEBIO
North Sea Salt Works believe strongly in organic foods and sustainable production practices. Therefore our salt production follows all guidelines for us to create an organic product in a sustainable manner, but for the time being European Union (EU) regulations for organic products certification does not include salt as one of the product groups EU can certify as organic under their DEBIO program. However, we are excited that there is now in the EU a process started to revise the existing regulations for organic production. You can read more about it here: ifoam-eu.org/en/what-we-do/organic-regulations
As the discussion is going now, salt will be regulated in the revised regulation in the EU. When this is implemented Debio will be able to certify salt as organic. The goal is that the new regulation will be implemented from January 2017. However, there will be a period of time before it will be implemented through the EEA-mechanism in Norway*. If you see a European product on the spice shelf in your grocery store with the DEBIO logo it is a herbal salt where the herbs are certified as organic not the salt.
We will keep our customers and partners posted on the development.
*Norway is not a member of the EU, but tied in to the legislations though the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement.
